Learn about the creation of neutralizing antibody treatment for Covid-19. Get information on how the treatment is expected to work in humans.
The emergence of Covid-19 in December 2019 has disrupted the economy and health system. People are unable to go to work like they used to, and the available hospitals in different countries across the globe merely have the capacity to accommodate Covid-19 patients.
However, there is a lot of hope in beating the virus. Scientists, researchers, and doctors across the globe are working relentlessly to contain the spread of the virus, and at the same time, find effective treatment options for Covid-19. It would be safe to say that so far, no vaccine has been approved, and no cure has been found. Still, over 365,000 people have recovered from the disease. This has been the base for the development of vaccines.
The Institute of Microbiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences through research and clinical trials has had a breakthrough in creating a neutralizing antibody treatment for Covid-19. So far, it has shown great promise.
The drug is the world’s first neutralizing antibody treatment, and Phase 1 of its clinical trial. The neutralizing treatment works by stopping the growth of the novel coronavirus. However, note that it has only been found to be effective in arresting the growth of coronavirus in animal testing: there is no answer to the question of whether it is effective in humans yet.
In animal testing, which in this case, rhesus monkeys were used, the drug showed efficacy in reducing the viral load in the respiratory tracts of the infected animals. The neutralizing monoclonal antibody is expected to reduce the viral load in the respiratory tracts of humans too.
The name of the antibody is CB6, and it works by disrupting the bonding process between the ACE2 receptor and the novel corona. By interfering with the binding process, the treatment will block the virus from infecting cells.
The Institute of Microbiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences says that they have dozens of genes derived from recovered Covid-19 patients that can be used to create the neutralizing antibody treatment. The institute has gone further ahead to patent the treatment, as they believe that it will enter production quickly once it has been approved.
The neutralizing monoclonal antibody is believed to have great promise and potential and will serve as both treatment and vaccine for Covid-19. There is, however, still a long way to go as the human immune response can be complex. The neutralizing antibody treatment underway, CB6, is still worth celebrating. Research and science have come a long way.
